AMAZING!!!

Nathan was forced into entering the poetry slam at school. His teacher made him enter. He won!!! He won a cash prize, but he'll find out tomorrow how much. The first poem was the poem that his teacher thought was his best and when he made it to the second round, he chose the poem that he thought was his best. Three teachers were the judges. His first poem he was told to do it on a made up persona that was going through a hard time in his life. The second poem he was supposed to describe a happy time in his life using imagery. And without further ado...

Waiting

I am old; I am dying.
Alone on a hard bed, chemicals assaulting my nose.
Watching doctors rush past, helping those that might live.
Waiting for this disease to gnaw away the final pieces of me,
waiting to join my wife in heaven.
My daughter has gone, not wanting to see me die,
my son is in the hallway, somber and tired.
I look back on my life, wishing I had done more.
These last few days have been hard,
all my visitors sad and sympathetic,
apologizing for things that are not their fault, wanting to help.
I am fading, as all things do, one day even the pyramids will fade to dust.
Praying, crying, waiting...
for my final adieu.

Wow!

And there it was.
This metal behemoth, this steel giant,
this king of the amusement park,
daring any brave mortal to challenge him.
And there we were, looking up up up!
Gazing in awe of this mechanical titan...
Wow!

And there we were,
In line waiting to challenge this monster,
shaking as if the furies themselves were at our heels.
It swallowed up challenger after champion,
all we heard were screams and roars.
It mocked and teased us...
Wow!

And then it was our turn.
Determined not to let our courage falter,
we were strapped into cold seats.
And then we were going, up up up,
not looking down, only ahead,
hearing cries of joy float up from below...
Wow!

And then there we were, my dad and I,
at the top of a monster that made others cower in fear.
And then we fell, down down down!
My mouth screaming, my thoughts racing, my heart in my throat.
And then an excitement I had felt seldom before,
it started down deep and worked out as a roar!
There is only one word that describes the fun and the fear,
the worry and wonder, the triumph and terror...
WOW!

It's hard to see how this young man could put into words so near perfect and even know about the pain and sorrow of lifes end. Nathan, you should try writing for profit. Astonishing to say the least. Love Daddy

Speaking of poetry;

THESE ARE ENTRIES TO A WASHINGTON POST COMPETITION ASKING FOR A TWO-LINE RHYME WITH THE MOST ROMANTIC FIRST LINE, AND THE LEAST ROMANTIC SECOND LINE:

1. My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you has screwed up my life.

2. I see your face when I am dreaming.
That's why I always wake up screaming.

3. Kind, intelligent, loving and hot;
This describes everything you are not.

4. Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss,
But I only slept with you 'cause I was pissed.

5. I thought that I could love no other
-- that is until I met your brother.

6. Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is your head

7. I want to feel your sweet embrace;
But don't take that paper bag off your face.

8. I love your smile, your face, and your eyes
Damn, I 'm good at telling lies!

9. My love, you take my breath away.
What have you stepped in to smell this way?

10. My feelings for you no words can tell,
Except for maybe 'Go to hell.'

11. What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime.

WHO SAID POETRY IS BORING?

Love Daddy
